This
is a vintage late 1950's Mickey Mantle Holiday Inn Ashtray. In
1956, Harold D. Youngman approached Mickey Mantle about
leasing and operating a Holiday Inn hotel in Joplin,
Missouri. It was agreed that Mickey would be named the
president of the Mickey Mantle Motel Corp., the Holiday
Inn, and Youngman would be the vice president. The hotel
opened for business on January 10, 1957.
The
Hotel's Gift Shop featured Mickey Mantle's Holiday Inn
mementos that included; postcards, matches, jewelry, pens
and pencils, photographs, an “Our Trip” diary, pennants,
pocket knives and more. There were 2 or 3 styles of
ashtrays made of heavy glass, that had a picture of Mickey
swinging with the Holiday Inn Mantle logo. This ceramic
Ashtray is most likely dated to around 1957 through to the
early 1960s.
The Ceramic Ashtrays are very rare
because not many survived over the years. The few that do
surface in auctions often show chips or and cracks. Few
have made it in the condition of the ashtray pictured
above. Because of it's rarity it is difficult to put an
accurate value on these ceramic ashtrays. The glass
ashtrays are far more common and typically sell in the
$150.-$250. price range.
