Pictured
above is a 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie Card
#253. The 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle #253 is the true
Rookie card. The 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card
#311 (pictured below) is more sought after by
collectors, but the Mickey Mantle 1951 Bowman card is
more scarce than the Mantle 1952 Topps card which had a
double print.
Topps
did not issue a Mickey Mantle card in 1954. Bowman took
advantage of being the only company with rights to
Mickey Mantle. Pictured below center 1954 Bowman
Mickey Mantle card #65. Bowman was a well-known card manufacturer that began production in 1948 with baseball, football, and basketball cards.
Bowman produced baseball cards through 1955, and the following
year in 1956 Topps purchased the company and ended their rivalry in the sports card market. In 1989, Topps once again began production of cards with the Bowman name.
The 1969
Topps Mickey Mantle card #500 would be his last card
issued during his career. There are two variation of
this card. One with Mantle in white letters, and one
with Mantle with Yellow letters (pictured below right).
The white letter card is the rare card and is more
expensive.
