NOTES: |
This
is a vintage 1942 St. Louis Cardinals World Series Press Pin. The
St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York
Yankees in the fall
classic four games to one. Press
Pins which have been distributed since 1911, are
distributed to members of the media by the host teams
for the World Series games. The press pins
are made to be worn on the lapel to provide reporters
access to cover the game. This Sportsman's Park
press pin
has
a Safety pin brooch, and was made by
St. Louis Button
Co.
The construction of this
press pin actually makes it one of the most desirable and valuable of the past seventy-five years. Restrictions upon use of metal as a result of the nation's involvement in the Second World War forced the
St. Louis Button Co. to craft the pin from celluloid and paper instead, resulting in an infinitely more fragile keepsake that puts it high on the endangered species list. This
back pictured below is missing its safety pin brooch back.
See the 1943 press pin for an intact example.
