This is a vintage
1926 - 1933 John Heydler Spalding Official National League
Baseball. The baseball can be dated to this era by the "Cushioned Cork
Center" stamp which replaced the patent date below
the "REG. U.S. PAT. OFF." stamp on the earlier
ball and the removal of the words "Cork"
and "Center" which appeared before and after
the word "Official" respectively. The
following year in 1934 the stamp of the League President
was moved from the east panel, as seen on this ball, and
placed on the center panel .This was also the last
National League baseball with Red & Black stitching
as in 1934 both leagues started using red
stitching.
The patent date or number
appears on the north panel and there are three variation
which in chronological order would be "PAT. MAR. 17-25"
for the baseballs made in 1926 & 1927
"PAT. RE. 17200" for baseballs made from 1928
-1933. There is also a variation
where "PAT.
MAR. 17-25" appears below the "NO 1" as
opposed to above the "Horse Hide" stamp
(pictured below).
The tight stich Spalding logo is
used in 1926 & 1927, the wide stitch Spalding logo is used
for baseballs made from 1928 to 1933.
