This is a
1938 1939 Ford Frick Spalding Official National League Baseball.
The Yellow baseball was an experiment brained stormed by
Brooklyn Dodgers president Larry MacPhail. The idea
being that a yellow ball would be seen better at night.
The ball was used during the first game of an Aug. 2
Brooklyn Dodgers double header against
the St. Louis cardinals at Ebbets Field.
The two teams went back to the white ball in the second game as the Dodgers swept the doubleheader 6–2 and 9–3.
New York Daily News reporter Hy Turkin asked starting pitchers, Freddie Fitzsimmons of the Dodgers and Curt Davis of the Cardinals, how they felt about the yellow balls. They were, Turkin reported, "not enthusiastic."
The Cardinals‚ partial to MacPhail's yellow-dyed baseballs‚ use them at Sportsman's
Park in a game played on July 31,1939, and beat the Dodgers‚ 5-2.
This was the only time Major
League Baseball experimented with yellow baseballs at the major league level.
