The Junior Sales Club of America was
a greeting card company, founded in
1953, which promoted its products by
motivating kids to sell boxed
assortments of cards in exchange for
money and prizes. Young entrepreneurs
who sold enough cards could win
exciting prizes, such as a Daisy Eagle
Air Rifle, a record player, or even a
Mickey Mantle baseball glove. Ads were
commonly found in a number of comic
books, and Boys' Life magazine.
Junior Sales Club of America ads featuring Mickey Mantle started to appear
in Boys' Life in 1957. Using the same
concept from the Junior Sales Club of
America, the National Youth Sales Club
advertised in Boy's Life as well. The
August 1962 issue of Boys' Life, Roger
Maris "Baseball Home Run King"
recruited youngsters to the sales
program, with a "Hit A Homer Win A
Bike" contest. In 1963, Mickey Mantle
headed the contest. Both were two page
ads, and when "you reached first base"
by selling 12 boxes you received an
autographed picture of Maris in 1962,
and Mantle in 1963. (A Homer was 60
boxes)
From 1963, to 1967 the National Youth Sales Club took out two page Boys'
Life magazine ads,
with Mickey Mantle. Sell only 12
boxes that you received ON CREDIT, and
you can receive a free autographed
picture of Mickey Mantle, and an
official Membership badge. The same ad
appeared in the
March 1966 issue of
Boys' Life, with Willie Mays on the
cover. The year of the advertisement
appears at the top or bottom of the
page.
