There's not much catalog
information available for the
Louisville Bat Company, which became a
subsidiary for Louisville Slugger. J.F Hillerich &
Son, would sometimes acquire the plants
of small bat manufacturers, to increase
production of their own brand of
baseball bats. In some cases, they
continued to manufacture the brand they
purchased for a number of years after.
The Louisville Bat Co., No. 21 Professional League decal baseball bat is
compatible to the No. 19, and the J.F Hillerich
& Son, No. 17. Made of extra quality
second growth straight grain white ash
with a new burnished bat finish, all
three bats carry the same "Used By All
Professional Leagues" decal.
The "Burnished" bat finish was patented by J.F. Hillerich & Son in 1902.
The process or method to harden the
surface of the bat, with the same
intent as the "Bone-Rubbed" finish
which closes pores of wood and gives a
harder hitting surface. This is done
with the application of friction and
heat applied to the bat While it is
still in the turning-lathe and rotated
at a high speed.
The decal on the barrel to the right of
the Horseshoe logo
reads; "Used By All Professional
Leagues," was the same decal
produced by the Palm Fechteler & Co.
for J. F. Hillerich & Son, for use on
its popular line of decal bats during
the period 1910 to 1915. The only
difference is the color scheme.
