NOTES:

The Little Boys Baseball league was formed when 61 teams in South Carolina departed Little League baseball in 1955. While Jackie Robinson integrated the major leagues in 1947 and South Carolina native Larry Doby followed three months later as the first African American in the American League, the desegregation of baseball in South Carolina took longer. Youth baseball took the longest to integrate.

The Cannon Street YMCA all-star team registered for a baseball tournament in Charleston, South Carolina, in July 1955. It put the team and the forces of integration on a collision. White teams refused to take the field with the Cannon Street all-stars, the first Black Little League team in South Carolina.

Other teams from the Southeast followed South Carolina’s lead, ignoring instructions from Little League headquarters in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, directing that they play. Although the Cannon Street team was declared the winner by default, they could only watch the Little League World Series after being declared ineligible because they had not earned the right on the playing field.

Having refused to accept Little League directives to allow black teams, white officials from South Carolina and other southern states formed an independent organization called "Little Boys Baseball, Inc." The foundation for Dixie Youth was created. After a legal battle with "Little League" baseball over the name, the league changed its name to Dixie Youth Baseball Inc., around 1966. The Dixie league, became integrated in 1967.

This Wilson A1546 "PowerFused" Mickey Mantle "Little Boys Baseball Inc." features the 1965-1970s Wilson bat label manufacturing period center brand. The league's name change to "Dixie Youth Baseball Inc." narrows down the dating to about 1965-1966. Baseball bats were sold at retail stores, local to team cities that participated in the league. In 1967, Dixie Youth League baseball bats were given away to fans 14 years and under, at Hanley Field, home of the Lakeland Tigers.
