In answer to popular demand of the
fans, in 1950 the Yankees created a new
department: Yankee Souvenirs. The new
department was to handle all mail
requests for autographed picture sets,
sketch books, autographed baseballs,
team pictures, 1949 world Series
souvenir programs, and Yankee baseball
caps. The same items that were sold at
special booths in each lobby at Yankee
Stadium. These Yankee Souvenir mail
order cards were printed up, and made
available at the stadium. They were
also mailed out in reply to fan mail,
autograph or ticket requests.
The "Autographed Baseballs" are facsimile stamped baseball produced by the Autographed Ball Company.
(the players received a penny for each
ball sold) The "Autographed Picture
Sets" are the Picture Pack photos that
are currently a favorite with
collectors. The term "Sketch books" was
used for what we now refer to as
yearbooks. An article in the 1950
Yankee scorecards also makes the
announcement of the new Yankee Souvenir
department, and it sates:
"Ideal gifts for baseball minded
youngsters or treasures for club rooms
and dens" ..... (A 1950 man cave
before it's time.)
