On March 4, 2021 Major League
Baseball announced that the Inaugural
"Lou Gehrig Day" is set for June 2. The
new annual, league-wide event will be a
time not only to honor and celebrate
the legacy of the Hall of Fame first
baseman but to raise awareness and
funds to fight amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis (ALS), the awful disease that
ended Gehrig’s life and informally
bears his name.
Every team with a home game Wednesday, June 2, 2021 displayed the “4-ALS”
logos in their ballpark, commemorating
Gehrig’s jersey number. All players,
managers and coaches wore this
special “Lou Gehrig Day” patch on their
uniforms, and red “4-ALS” wristbands
will be available to be worn in-game.
(Teams that were off on Wednesday
observed Lou Gehrig Day on Thursday,
June 3.)
The uniform patch is attached to display card that pictures a
uniform
sleeve. (the patch was actually worn on
the front top left of the players
jersey) The top of the card reads; "The
Iron Horse Lou Gehrig 1903-1941" -
"Today I Consider Myself The Luckiest
Man On The Face Of The Earth." The back
of the card features three thumbnail
pictures of the Iron Horse, and the
"Legend Of Lou Gehrig"
