Aggressive style of play and base
running of the 1870s, causing
wear-and-tear on the body, led to the
development of padded uniform pants.
Quilted padding baseball pants were
offered in catalogs until about the mid
1910's when padding worn under the
pants became more preferred by ball
players.
The "Spalding Base Ball Uniform" No. 0. was the highest grade made. Used
exclusively by all league and
professional clubs for years past.
(National League rules require that
only Spalding equipment could be used)
Uniform Colors: White, Pearl Gray, Yale
Gray, Light Gray, Black, Maroon, Royal
Blue, Navy Blue, Brown and Green. The
quilted padded pants were available
with elastic, or tape bottoms.
Spalding added the padded base ball pants to their catalog in the early
1890s, and carried them into the 1910s.
The A.G. Spalding uniform tag on this
maroon padded pants dates it to about
1900 to 1912.
