After
announcing his retirement in March of
1969, the Yankees made plans to honor
Mickey Mantle with a special day. On
June 8, 1969 New York's Mayor Lindsey
declared it Mickey Mantle Day, and the
New York Yankees ceremoniously retired
the number 7 worn by Mantle. Several
souvenir items were produced to
commemorate the occasion, including
special programs, pennants, and
buttons. The buttons were sold attached
to a pennant and sold separately
through souvenir vendors in, and
outside Yankee Stadium.
This black & white pin back button features Mickey Mantle in a
right-handed batting pose wearing
his Yankees road jersey. The words “Mickey
Mantle Day, June 8, 1969” is arched at
the top of the pin. The pin measures 1¾
inches in diameter, and has "Mickey
Mantle" in print along the rim.
Reproduction or "Fantasy pins" shown
below right, are commonly found on eBay
selling for about $10. These 4" buttons
using the Sport Magazine name, were
manufactured in great quantities
sometime in the 1980's. The pin was
originally issued with black letters
and gray 7s on the side, but the more
common variation features all white
letters.
