Founded in 1979, ESPN - Entertainment
and Sports Programming Network, is a
U.S.-based global pay television sports
channel. ESPN Wednesday Night Baseball
debuted in 1990. Showing single games
on Wednesday and Sunday nights, and
double headers on Tuesday and Friday
nights, ESPN wanted complete 161-game
coverage of the 1990 baseball schedule.
ESPN actually aired 300 games in 1990
since the network needed back up games,
because of local blackouts. The back up
games were shown in the cities of the
competing teams, or in case of rain.
ESPN had hired six groups of announcers to work the games: Sundays; Jon
Miller and Joe Morgan, Tuesdays; Sean
McDonough and Ray Knight; Chris Berman
and Tommy Hutton. Wednsdays; Gary
Thorne, Norm Hitzges and Mike Lupica.
Friday's; Steve Zabriskie and Jim
Palmer; Gary Thorne, Norm Hitzges.
This "ESPN WEDNESDAY NIGHT BASEBALL" banner was used on location at
baseball games being covered by ESPN,
during the 1990's. The heavy Tyvek
paper banner measures about 4' by 8'
and has eight grommets so it can be
tied to fences, crowd control gates,
and barriers.
