The
Walloping Willie, No. 311 press action
toy was made by the Kohner
Brothers, of 155 Wooster St., New York,
NY. Originally named the Kohner Toy
Company, they produced simple string
bead, wooden pull toys, and their
flagship swinging clown. in 1947 the
company bought the patented rights from
the Swiss inventor, Marty Meinard, to
produce a line of toys that would be
called Push Button Puppets. These
rights began years of court actions
against other companies including
Fisher Price, who were copying Kohner’s
new puppet designs. They stopped some
of the companies from copying their
design but not all. The push button
puppets, became the company's most
popular, and profitable product at that point in time.
As
advertised in a 1951 'Toy and Novelty'
trade magazine, the "Lovable Walloping
Willie, inspired by the most popular
game in America, always a hit! Retail
$1.00." The press action toys were sold
in a red & black box. One panel
features the
patent no. 2,421,279, at the top
and a "Kohner Product" at the bottom. In 1957 the company started to
manufacture the Mickey Mantle Baseball
Action Game no. 425, which had a
suggested retail price of $1.00. Year
later Kohner's infant crib toy Busy Box
became the company's flagship product,
and released the popular game of
"Trouble" in 1965. Kohner Bros. Inc.
was sold to General Foods in 1969
