McLoughlin
Brothers Inc., located in New York, were the
premiere American publishers of
Juvenile books, and games for it's
time. The publishing firm was active
between 1858 and 1920. The company
published a wide range of products,
including; linen books, puzzles, games,
paper dolls, and novelties. Their games
were not patented so many of the same
games were manufactured by several
companies, but McLoughlin printed in
beautiful chromolithography making them
the most desired in the hobby today. In
1920 Milton Bradley acquired McLoughlin
Brothers, and continued to produce
picture books under the McLoughlin name
until the 1970's.
This McLoughlin Brothers, Base Ball
Parlor Game was part of the "Junior
Series" issued around 1892.
McLoughlin Bros. produced its first
tabletop baseball games in 1886, one,
catalog No. 440
called "Game of
Base Ball," the others No.
550 "Home Base Ball," and No.
552 "The National Game of Base-Ball." The Junior
Series game No. 408, was a very simple version, calculated
exclusively as a child's game. The games
evolved over the years with different
covers, and variations in play.
The instructions on the box cover reads: The players divide into two
parties or sides; one side plays as
Batsmen and the other as Fielders. The
Batsmen take the nine pieces and spin
the dial in turn, first putting a man
on the Batsman's space. The Fielders do
not spin until they become Batsmen.
After each spin, the Batsmen the
Batsmen must abide by the directions on
the dial, and as fast as a Batsman
becomes a base runner, they put a new
man at the bat. When three men are out,
the Fielders play as Batsmen. The best
score at the Bat in nine inning, wins
the game.
