First sold in 1952 "Ho-Jo the Bo" a
rubber squeak toy was produced by Rempel Manufacturing Inc. of Akron,
Ohio. Ho-Jo the Bo, came in a Knot hole
fence designed box. The cigar smoking Ho-Jo,
based off the lovable Brooklyn Bum
character created by renowned
cartoonist Willard Mullin, is wearing a
black jacket, blue pants and hat, with
a White vest. In 1957, Rampel
introduced "Campy The Tramp," the same
as Ho-Jo, but wearing a brown Jacket,
green pants and hat with a yellow vest.
The timing of the change might be due
to the Brooklyn Dodgers move to Los
Angeles. There are some Ho-Jo Toys with
the yellow vests that might have been
made in 1957 but placed in an older
box.
The knotted fence window box, reads '"Ho-Jo" the Bo' at the top and
'"Campy" the Tramp' for the 1957 toy.
The back of the box shows the
respective bums watching the game
through a knothole, which reads "Knot
holes Reserved,"
and "© Fred G. Reinert" at the bottom.
One side of the box reads Sanitary,
Durable, washable, Harmless colors,
"Made of Natural Latex Rubber." The
opposite pane reads "Kiddies prefer..
'The Little Folk From Sunnyslope"' The
round squeak mechanism on the back of
the toy reads "Rempel Manufacturing
Akron, Ohio."
