The 1962 Roger Maris
Action Baseball Game, was issued by the Pressman
toys Corp. the year after Maris set the single
season home run record, of 61 in '61. The
wooden framed tin
lithograph baseball field, action board,
featured a spring
tension baseball bat, with a peg scoreboard
on the right, and depicts a Roger Maris
like player in a pose as holding the
bat, with his facsimile autograph to
the left.
The pitching mechanism (not shown) above the pitcher is
usually missing from this game, as is
the rare "How to Play Maris Baseball"
instruction sheet which describes Roger
Maris' record breaking season and
batting tips. A game with all the pieces, pitching mechanism and, the "How to Play Maris
Baseball" instruction sheet in
near mint condition could sell for
$200. or more. The cover of the
"Pressman Times" Newspaper illustration
box, headlines "ROGER MARIS, ACTION
BASEBALL" - 'A Pessy toy on TV' as seen
in the youtube video below. The cover
article caption reads "Official Maris
Baseball Game! All Metal Field!
Scoreboard! Automatic Umpire! (the
bell)
Pressman Toys issued these tin lithograph baseball games prior to 1962,
but without a player endorsement. The
game in the TV commercial (in the video
below) shows the original 'Action
Baseball' game. A picture of Maris was
placed over the instructions box on the
one Roger is holding at the beginning.
In 1967 Pressman issued a Carl
Yastrzemski Action Baseball game, and
in 1970 Tom Seaver.
