NOTES:

Chances are your first piece of jewelry came from a vending machine. Baseball Themed Flicker Rings gained popularity in the 1960s. Lenticular technology was invented and popularized by the Vari-Vue company back in the 1930's but the baseball rings took off in 1960. Vari-vue rings which were manufactured in Hong Kong can be identified by having a "V" on each of the sides.

However, in 1986 loose flickers (just the lenticular lens) with no ring bases were sold off by Vari-Vue in a liquidation auction. Large quantities of flicker ring knockoffs started to flood the market from China. Not only had they copied many of Vari Vue's images, but they also copied the V-base style base previously manufactured in Hong Kong.

The difference between the Chinese flickers and Vari Vue flickers are distinguishable, since the Chinese flicker is twice the thickness of a Vari Vue flicker. The word China was also molded into the back of the base where the two prongs meet. if it reads "China," or nothing at all, then it is a 1980's knockoff which are commonly listed for sale as 1960's.

Flicker rings have been legitimately produced by many other companies besides the Vari Vue Company, that used Vari-Vue lenses on their own ring base. In 1960 the Penny King company sold Flicker Action Baseball Player rings that were vacum-plated. MLB Team Rings were also produced by L.M. Becker & Co. that were sold with candy in vending boxes.
