The Youth's Companion was published by
Perry Mason Company from 1827-1929.
known as "The Companion—For All the
Family," the children's magazine
existed for over one hundred years
until it merged with The American Boy
in 1929. The June 2, 1921 issue
features a back cover Lemon-Crush
advertisement with a Norman Rockwell
painting, "The Home Run." The
"-like lemon? drink Lemon-Crush" ad
features a fan at the ballpark handing
a Crush
soda-pop bottle to
a New York Yankee ball player.
Established in 1916, the Orange Crush
Company commissioned Rockwell to do
twelve paintings, for advertisements,
at $300. each. This was the only
contract Rockwell ever accepted for
advertising work. At the time of these
advertisements, the company made three
flavors of Crush, Orange, Lemon and
Lime. The advertisements were published
in a wide variety of magazines.
Collier's, The Literary Digest, and The
Youth's Companion, to name a few.
Five of the twelve Norman Rockwell
painting used in ads include: The "Bribe"
(Lime-Crush) - "An Orange Crush"
(Orange Crush) - "Yong Girl With Orange
Crush" (Orange Crush) - "One Touch Of
Nature" (Orange and Lemon Crush) - "The
Home Run" (Lemon Crush)
