Continuing with it's Lucky Strike
"It's Toasted" ad campaign, started in
1917, the American Tobacco Company,
pushed the concept that "toasting" the
tobacco, would remove impurities, and
corrosive Acrids. "No
Throat-Irritation-No Cough."
The company cited: "Years ago, when
cigarettes were made without the aid of
modern science, there originated that
ancient prejudice against all
cigarettes. That criticism is no longer
justified. Lucky Strike, the finest
cigarette you ever smoked, made of the
choicest tobacco properly aged and
skillfully blended. It's Toasted"
In 1928 famous people, dancers, motion
picture stars, athletes, were recruited
to testify in behalf of Lucky Strike.
Even Amelia Earhart, first woman to fly
the Atlantic by airplane said "Lucky
Strikes were the cigarettes carried on
the 'Friendship' when she crossed the
Atlantic. They were smoked continuously
from Trepassey lo Wales. I think
nothing else helped so much lo lessen
the strain for all of us."
Future HOF pitcher Waite Hoyt was featured in a number of Lucky Strike ads
in 1928. In one the New York Yankee is
quoted: ""I have always smoked Lucky
Strikes. I enjoy their splendid flavor
and they have never had the slightest
effect on my physical condition." The
1928 ad pictured above appeared on the
back cover of the January Review of
Reviews Magazine issue. The same ad was
featured on the back cover of the
Febuary 1929 issue of The Golden Books
Magazine, and in the New York Times
Newspaper in the August, 23, 1928
issue, page 15.
