NOTES:

The National Centennial Commission held a contest to design an emblem for the 100th anniversary of baseball in the summer of 1938. Unveiled in December, at the annual meeting of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, the winning design was awarded to New York artist Majori Bennet. The design was used on such items as stationary, publications, souvenirs and advertising.

The 1839-1939 baseball Centennial matchbooks were produced by the Universal Match Corp. of Philadelphia PA. They feature the official insignia of baseball’s centennial on the front cover. The back striker side features the advertising. This cover (below) has an advertisement for Little Tavern Shops. Opened in 1927 Tavern shops were the second oldest hamburger chain in the country behind White Castle.

The cover reads "After The Game Meet And Eat At The Little Tavern Shops 'Famous for 5¢ Hamburger' Forty Convenient Locations." The inside lists locations in Washington D.C., Maryland, and noting a location in Louisville Kentucky. The saddle reads "1939-Baseball Centennial-1939"
