In 1949, Woodrow Press Inc. New York, offered a baseball schedule and
fact book for clients to advertise
their business. The booklets featured
baseball player illustrations with a
blank space at the bottom reserved for
advertising. The LaSalle Hat Company
makers of Champ Hats issued the free
premium booklets to stores that carried
their product. The blank space was used
by the stores, such as McClanahan's,
who included the "Free Champ Hat's 1949
Baseball Schedule!" in their newspaper
advertisement below .
The cover of the Champ Hats Baseball
schedules depicts an unofficial
illustration of Lou Gehrig. A 22 by 30
inch poster was also issued to stores,
to announce the Free Informative 1949
baseball schedule. Other booklets with
different illustrations were also
produced for advertisers such as
Gillette Tires, which were distributed
by service stations, "Compliments of"
Gillette. The Woodrow Press also used
the books to advertise their printing
business.
The contents of the 40 page 1949 Baseball Schedule and Fact Book contains:
Predictions of the final 1949 Major
League standings; American, and
National League schedules; 1948
American and National League
statistics; American Association,
International, Pacific Coast, Texas,
Southern and Eastern League Schedules;
1948 World Series and composite scores;
Major League Individual All-Time
Records; Home Run Leaders; No Hit Games;
25 baseball Quiz Question, and
Answers; Babe Ruth Records, and a
personal data page.
