As advertised on Gillette's World
Series Broadcasts in 1953, Gillette
included a Free 96 page "exclusive," World Series Record Book, with
the purchase of Gillette Super-Speed
Razor. The 3 by 4 inch book came
attached to the styrene travel Case
with 6 Gillette Blue Blade, for $1.00.
The book was published by A.S. Barnes
and Company. The forward was written by
Gillette Cavalcade of Sports announcer
Jimmy Powers.
Edited by New York Sports writer Hy
Turkin, author of the Baseball
Encyclopedia, the book contains; All-time
records, diagrams of all ballparks, how
to score, 1953 player rosters,
All-Star Game records, Composite Box
scores for the 1952 World Series and
more.
To help promote the book trough
newspapers across the country, Turkin gave
away $100. to the first 10 people to
answer the question: "Who is the only
player to break the basic law of
baseball that a man must be with a team
during the regular season in order to
play in a World Series game?"
Answers were to be sent to; Hy Turkin
c/o WPIX New York, or in some papers,
Hy Turkin at the New York Daily News.
Readers would have to buy the Gillette Super-Speed Razor with the record
book to find The answer as
follows: Marv Rickert of the
Boston Braves played in the 1948 World
Series. He was traded by Cincinnati to
the Braves on May 11, 1948 for Danny
Litwhiler and was sent immediately to
Milwaukee, then of the American
Association. On the last day of the
regular season Jeff Heath, Braves
outfielder, fractures a leg sliding
home. The Braves asked and received
permission from the Commissioner, Happy
Chandler, to bring up Rickert to
replace Heath in the series.
Some newspapers cheated and gave away the answer to their readers, who
were instructed to send it in to claim
the $100.
