The Roger Maris "Have a
real
cigarette_ Camel" R.J. Reynolds Tobacco
Co. ad campaign started in 1961 with an
ad featuring the World Champion New
York Yankees. Featured
in the ad are Whitey Ford, Yogi
Berra, Bill Showron, and Roger Maris
"Mr. Home Run" at the top. Roger was
also a 1962 smoke blower on the famous
Camel Cigarettes Claridge Hotel
advertising sign in Times Square.
The sign was installed in 1941 on the facade of the Claridge Hotel at West
44th Street and Broadway. Every four
seconds, from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m., the
smoker exhaled a perfect “O” from his
mouth, using steam from the hotel
heating system.
The 1962 Roger Maris "Have a real
cigarette_ Camel" magazine ad pictures
Maris leisurely having a Camel
cigarette, with the quote "For a smooth
rich-tasting smoke, you can't To
Camels" Roger Maris New York Yankees.
At the top of the ad, picturing hands
and bat reads: "Reaching for the Record
Books!, These hands rewrote the records
with a baseball bat. They're the hands
of Roger Maris...the man who hit 61
home runs in '61. Roger smokes Camels.
He likes 'em. Gets real enjoyment every
time he lights up!"
