As Stated in The
Morning Herald, Hagerstown, Maryland
newspaper, May 12, 1944; "The Calvert Distillers
Corp, have come up with another new
baseball novel and it proves very
interesting. It is called the Calvert
Baseball Wheel and it gives you major
facts about major league teams for the
past six years. A mighty handy thing to
have around when fanning bees or
arguments start." The two Calvert
baseball wheels provides statistics for
the leading hitters, and pitchers for
each Major League team.
One side reads "Clear Heads Choose Calvert" and "Major Facts about the
Major Leagues" also pictures the "Be
Wise" Calvert Owl. The wheels feature the stats
for the 8 American League teams by
moving the outer wheel for the selected
team. There is also a space for "Rain
Out" that might just be a space filler
as there are no stats provided. The
reverse side provides stats for the 8
National League teams, and the Calvert
whiskey advertisement. The 1943 Wheel
reads "Smoothness and lightness in
Calvert merge to make a whiskey
treasure. Be wise and choose the HAPPY
Blend- Its tops in Drinking pleasure!
TRY IT!"
Each Wheel provides three years of
statistics for each team, 1940-1942,
and 1941-1943. Manager, Leading Hitter,
Bat. Average, Leading Pitcher,
Won-Lost, and Club Standing. "Figures
complied by The Sporting News" Calvert
issued a number of Sports related
Wheels that includes "34 years of
Champions" Golf, Baseball, Boxing, and
Tennis on one side and Horse Racing,
Football and Bowling on the other side.
In 1959 Calvert issued a Baseball Wheel
for the years 1956-1958.
