After Dizzy Dean quit as Cubs
coach in 1941, he signed a three-year deal with
Falstaff Brewing to call Cardinals and
Browns home games on St. Louis radio
station KWK. Sam Breadon, the
Cardinals’ owner announced his
intention to create a six-station
Cards’ radio network in 1946, and
wanted “dignified - conventional”
announcers. The play-by-play team
didn’t include Dizzy Dean, despite his
huge popularity among the fans. Former
Cardinals’ manager Gabby Street would
be joined in the booth by an
up-and-coming young announcer named
Harry Caray.
In 1953, Falstaff hired Dizzy Dean to broadcast their Saturday “Game of
the Week” on ABC-TV, with Buddy
Blattner providing commentary. CBS TV took over the
Falstaff Brewing, Saturday broadcasts
in 1955, with
both Dean, and Blattner. Pee Wee Reese
replaced Blattner as Dean's partner in
1960.
The "Watch TV Game of the Week" 5-1/8
inch wooden mini baseball bat features
a Dizzy Dean facsimile autograph to the
left of the Falstaff trademark logo.
