The
Gillette Company was Major League
Baseball's official sponsor from 1939
to 2018. In 1939, Gillette president
Joseph Spang secured radio sponsorship
rights to the World Series on behalf of
Gillette for $100,000. In the 1940s,
Gillette was the sole sponsor for radio
broadcasts of the World Series, and in
1947 Gillette sponsored the first
televised World Series, as fans watched
on 5 to 7 inch Television screens. The
broadcasts were part of Gillette's
Cascade of Sports.
Gillette issued World Series Broadcast, mechanical Pencils in 1940, 1941,
1949 and 1950. The pencils were not
produced during the war years as
materials were rationed. The 1940 and
1941 pencils featured the Gillette
diamond logo, with "World - Series"
engraved at the top of the diamond,
below the diamond "Broadcast - 1940
(1941) The 1949 and 1950 pencils have
"Gillette" at the top followed by
"World Series Broadcast, 1949" (1950)
at the bottom.
The Gillette World Series Broadcast 1949 mechanical Baseball Bat Pencil
commemorates an historic event, when in
the ninth inning of Game 5 of the 1949
World Series, at Ebbets Field the
lights were turned on, making it the
first World Series game finished under
artificial lights.
