Entitled "How to Watch Baseball"
at the fieled or on television, was intended mainly for spectators,
but it also contains plenty of tips on
playing the game, as well as American
League and National League schedules
for 1953. This 48 page premium booklet,
available Free at Phillips 66 Stations
was written by 12 Major League stars.
Each of these major leaguers has contributed one or more chapters to the
book. You'll learn from Robin Roberts,
star pitcher of the Philadelphia
Phillies, that there is "no better
pitch" in baseball than a live, fast
ball, "provided the pitcher can keep it
where he wants it." Ralph Kiner of the
Pirates discusses the secrets of power
hitting, while Yankee Phil Rizzuto
tells how a properly executed bunt may
win a ball game quite as effectively as
a home run. Mickey Mantle tells how
speed counts.
Other players who contribute good advise are, Stan Musial, George ell,
Red Schoendiest, Roy Campanella, Whitey
Lockman, and Bob Lemon. The problems of
a baseball manager are discussed in a
chapter entitled "Masterminding," by
Paul Richards, manager of Chicago's
White Sox. Finally. Bill Stewart, Dean
of National; League Umpire's point of
view. A glossary of common baseball
expressions is included as well as two
pages of "baseball puzzlers" to enable
you to test your knowledge of the game.
