In 1950 Austin Nichols issued a
set of 6 sports themed advertising
matchbooks to promote their new line of
Pedro's Rum. The Series titled “Names
to Remember” which included; Boxers,
John L Sullivan - Heavy Weight Champion
(1882-1892), Robert Fitzsimmons - Heavy
Weight Champion, James J. Corbet -
Heavy Weight Champion (1892-1897),"
Football's Knute Rockne - Famous coach
of Notre Dame university, baseball
stars, Christy Mathewson - Ace Pitcher
N.Y. Giants, and John McGraw - Manager
N.Y. Giants (1903-1932). Each "Names to
remember" sports star is depicted in a
square, with his name to the right,
sport title, and a short career
highlight note.
Christy Mathewson Note: "Won 3 games against the Phila, Athletics in 1905
World Series. Was noted strike-out
artist." John J. McGraw Note: "His teams
won 10 National League pennants and
three World's Series. He was a leader!"
The back of the matchbooks feature a
Austin Nichol & Co. Inc., Pedro's Run
advertising. The inside of the cover
has a mail order blank for THE NEW ANCO
"SPORT SHORTS" 24 page booklet, which
features facts about "NAMES TO
REMEMBER"
