On November 13, 1961, Liebmann
Breweries, Inc., makers of Rheingold
beer, gave a party at Luchow's
Restaurant in NYC, to celebrate its
signing of an agreement to sponsor
radio and television broadcasts of the
New York Mets baseball games. From 1962
to 1973, Rheingold was the official
beer and sponsor of the New York Mets.
Not able to compete with the top
national Breweries of Anheiser Busch,
Schlitz, and Pabst, in 1973 Rheingold
closed the Brooklyn brewery.
The Rheingold Beer Salutes Gil Hodges Famous Number 14 Tray was issued
after Gil Hodges past away in 1972. The
center of the Rheingold beer tray is a
colorful illustration of Gil Hodges
wearing his New York Mets uniform with
his number 14. Along the top of the
Met-Blue rim reads; "Rheingold Salutes
Gil Hodges" and at the bottom "Famous
Number 14."
