This "Duplicate Counter" was
made by the Whitehead & Hoag Company,
who made over 5,000 different
advertising novelty items from about
1892 until 1959. The June 1905 Patent
on the back is a process for printing
on Pyroxylin AKA Celluloid, a material
used to make such items as pin back
buttons, or this scorekeeper. The
company also made Press Pins for the
World Series, and the 1910-12 Sweet
Caporal premium pins.
This Celluloid advertising novelty that functions as a baseball
score keeper is shaped as a 1910's era
baseball mitt. The glove features dials
to change the numbers at the top,
bottom and each side. Starting from the
top clockwise there are indicators for;
"OUTS," "RUNS HOME TEAM," "INNINGS," and
"RUNS VISITING CLUB." Whitehead & Hoag
would offer these novelties to sporting
goods related companies and featured
their adverting on the front and back.
The advertisement on the front of this novelty is for the William Read & Sons
company of Boston, Mass. A sporting
goods company that originally
specialized in military arms and
sporting goods. During the Civil War
Read's supplied the Union Troops with
most of their guns and ammunition.
In 1921 Wm Read & sons was taken over
by the Winchester Company. The
Advertisement reads from top to bottom:
"ATHLETIC OUTFITTERS WM READ & SONS."
followed by the Wm Read & Sons circle
bullet design logo with "Trade" -
"Mark" on each side respectively. Below
reads; "BOSTON MASS., CHARGES PREPAID
TO ANY POINT IN THE, UNITED SATATES,
DUPLICATE COUNTER, 10 CENTS
The back, on this advertising novelty features Blue Trade Mark Athletic Goods,
which is a product of Wm Read & Sons.
The advertisement reads from top to
