WPIX channel 11 New York, first signed
on the air, June 15, 1948. Twenty-one
days later on July 6, 1948 WPIX aired
their first baseball game between
rivals, the New York Giants and the
Brooklyn Dodgers. The independent
station started to air New York Giants
games in 1949 and the Yankees in 1951.
The New York Giants television
broadcasters in 1951 were Russ Hodges, and Ernie Harwell.
In 1957: Russ Hodges, Bob DeLaney, and
Jim Woods.
After nine seasons on WPIX,
the NY Giants went to the West Coast in
1957, the station quickly signed a
record-breaking contract with the
Yankees to televise over 140 ball games
at home and on the road. The contract
for over 400 programming hours was at
the time the largest single time sale
in the history of the medium. For 47
years, WPIX was the broadcast home of
the New York Yankees. The Yankees
television broadcasters in 1951: Mel
Allen, Bill Crowley, and Art Gleeson.

New York" television logo, and
reads "New York's Top Independent
Television Station" below, followed by

Station."
Below the striker reads; "Feature" Match Book Pat. 1,839845-6. Lion Match

is a Lion matchbook trademark for
covers with pictures, and or printing
on the match sticks. The inside of this
matchbook is blank.
