These "Me For Yoo-Hoo"
advertising Match books were produced
around 1960 by the Chicago Match Co.,
which specialized in Novelty "Book
Match" advertising. In 1956 it was
announced that Yogi Berra was named
Vice President of the company through a
15 year contract, working in market
development, sales promotion, and
public relations. Berra received
stocks, and little income, but would be
provided bigger earnings after his
playing days. Before the hiring of Yogi
Berra, Yoo-Hoo had a hard distributing
the product. Berra put the beverage
company on the map and Yoo-Hoo became a
household word.
Berra not only recruited a number of
investors to help finance a major
production facility, but also enlisted
the aid of many of his teammates, most
important Mickey Mantle, to help
promote the beverage. Their efforts
were very successful. In a short time
Yoo-Hoo became one of the most popular
refreshments in America.
The two Yoo-Hoo Matchbooks that were produced for the "Me For Yoo-Hoo"
advertising campaign featured
Yogi Berra on one, and Mickey Mantle
on the other. The matchbooks had
two different offers on the inside. One
was an offer for a book entitled
"The Story of "Yogi Berra."
The first edition story book was
published in 1958, and by 1961 the 4th
edition was printed. With the cover of
the matchbook, and $2.50 cents, you
received a copy through the mail. The
2nd had two offers. For .50 cents & the
matchbook cover, you
received an autographed kiddie baseball
cap. The match book cover & 2.00 bought
you an autographed regulation Major
League baseball by either: Berra,
Mantle, Skowron, Kubeck, Ford, or
McDougald. The 1958 Story Book, and
1960 being McDougald last year with the
Yankees loosely Dates the matchbooks to
1959-1961
The outer cover of the "Me For
Yoo-Hoo" Advertising matches were
yellow, with brown printing, on light
gray card stock. Older card stock
sitting around the printing shop for
some time accounts for the darker
shades of gray. It is believed by some
collectors that there were two
variation made. The second color
variation, light brown with dark brown
printing. At this time there is no
evidence of this. The porous quality of
the cardboard used could and would
absorb the yellow ink applied. The
fading could happen in a short period
of time after the printing, and quickly
fade from dark yellow to pale yellow,
to light brown to light beige,
regardless of the exposure to light,
which could also bleach out the yellow
even further. There is no evidence of a
second run using a different color.
In his 1989 autobiography, Berra
wrote: "One time I was in the office
and the phone rang when no one else was
around. I always answer a ringing
phone, so I did. The woman who was
calling asked if Yoo-Hoo was
hyphenated. I said, 'No ma'am, it's not
even carbonated."
