The 1970 -1976 Spalding Official
National League baseballs feature the
signature of the new National League
President Charles S. Feeney, replacing
Warren Giles. The sweet-spot has a new
design. The top line now reads
"OFFICIAL BALL" with a star on each
side, and below that "NATIONAL LEAGUE"
all in uppercase lettering. The
"Charles S. Feeney PRES." stamp below
that.
The 1970-1973 Spalding logo reads; "THE
CUSHIONED CORK CENTER" above, and has
two lines below that reads; "REG. U.S.
PAT. OFF, MADE IN U.S.A." The 1974-1976
baseball feature a slightly larger
Spalding circle logo and "SEWN IN
HAITI" is added below "MADE IN U.S.A."
In 1977 Rawlings becomes the official
manufacturer of Major League baseballs,
and the Rawlings logo was added to the
top of the ball.
The two pieces of figure-eight-shaped cowhide is dampened to permit
pliability and placed around a string
wound core, then placed in the
stitching clamp. The covers are stapled
together to hold in place for
stitching. The baseball is then
hand-stitched together with 216 raised
stitches. It takes about 13-14 minutes
to hand sew a baseball. The baseball
would have been stamped with
the brand name after the ball
was sewn.
