The No.
97 Official League baseball
was the highest quality baseball in the
Goldsmith catalog, made in compliance
to the specifications of organized
baseball. This Goldsmith "Preferred
Product" logo was used around the
1940-1944 manufacturing period. In 1945 Goldsmith
added the MacGregor name to their
products and became known as "MacGregor
Goldsmith" Then in 1952, the Goldsmith
name was dropped entirely and the
company was simply called MacGregor.
This
red & black stitched Official 97 League baseball
with the Emmet Harty presidents stamp,
was adopted by the Cotton States
League.
Judge Emmet Harty was president of the
major League affiliation, Class C,
Cotton States League from 1939 to 1941.
Starting out as a class D league, the
Cotton states League operated on and
off from 1902-1955. In 1936 it operated
as a class C circuit. Hall of Famers
that played in the cotton States league
include; Bill Dickey, in 1927 for the
Jackson Red Sox, and Billy Herman, in
1928 for the Vicksburg Hill Billies.
