Not to be confused with Goldsmith
Sporting Goods; P. Goldsmith's & Sons
of Cincinnati, Goldsmith’s Inc. of
Wichita, Kansas, was established in
1887. A Book & stationary store that
carried a full line of books,
stationery, confectionery, cigars,
tobacco and gent’s furnishing goods.
They became one of the country’s
largest office furniture dealers, and
eventually, in 1900, expanded their inventory to sporting goods,
which included a line of baseball
bats and gloves, that carried the
Goldsmith's Wichita brand name.
in the late 1920s, Goldsmith hired Ray “Hap” Dumont to grow the company’s
sporting goods business. Dumont was
particularly attracted to the promise
of mail order, but other interests took
much of his time, that would later make
him famous in baseball circles. The
National semi-professional baseball
tournament in Wichita was organized by
Hap Dumont. In 1935 Dumont organized
his first National tournament, whose
most valuable player was none other
than Satchel Paige.
Dumont's NBC - National Baseball
Congress, purchased its balls and
equipment from Goldsmith’s, whose
offices served as NBC headquarters
until 1948. Based on the baseball's
specifications, and manufacturing
stamping, the Lannom MFG. Co.; Worth
Sporting goods made the privately
branded baseballs for Goldsmith's. The
"Stratatex" binding method was patented
by Lannon MFG, Company in 1938, and this stamp is only found
on Worth baseballs.
The Goldsmith's Wichita brand
logo on the baseball at the top of the
page is dated closer to the 1950's or
later, and
the baseball below, loosely dated to
1938-1940's. In 1965, Goldsmith’s Inc. sold its sporting goods business, and on June 10,
2003, the company declared bankruptcy,
selling its assets to the John Marshall
Company.
