The John Dunlap Sporting Goods
Company No. JD 300 Official League
baseball was manufactured by a company
such as Worth - Lannom Manufacturing
Co. The ball was then stamped with the
John Dunlap SPTG. GDS. Oklahoma City
brand name. The rubber center horsehide
cover ball came in a generic box that
has been used for other sporting good
businesses and organizations.
In 1946 John Dunlap, Dale Arbuckle, Rusty McGinnis and Gunner Johnson,
open a sporting goods store, a
wholesale outlet for high school and
college team equipment. Located at 8 N
Broadway, in Oklahoma City, the four
partners chose to use the name of John
Dunlap who had been selling sporting
goods for 20 years, and was well known
through his travels. Dunlap was reputed
to know more Oklahoma coaches than any
man in the state. He was a Sooner
basketball star playing for Coach Hugh
McDermott from 1922 through 1926.
Dunlap sold his interest in the store
in 1964 and the name was changed to
Dunlap Sporting Goods, Inc. The
following year in 1965 the store was
moved to 2831 N.W. 59th street. The store was
in operation until the early 1980's.
