The St. Louis Cardinals won 95
games in 1934, the National League
pennant, and the 1934 World Series. In
1935 the team went 96-58 but finished
2nd to the Chicago Cubs who won 100
games. In 1936 they again finished
second but to the New York Giants. There were
great expectations for the 1937 St.
Louis Cardinals. The season
was going well until Dizzy Dean got hit
by a batted ball in
the all- star game, breaking his toe.
Joe Medwick won the
Triple crown with Johnny Mize pushing
him all the way. Mize may have won the
batting title if not for a beaning that
put him on the bench for a few games
and threw him off his game.
This Louisville Slugger commemorative
"Brown Bat," is similar to the "Black Bats" given to
participating players from teams in the
world series; league officials,
high-ranking executives and
dignitaries, each year from 1934-1998.
Hillerich & Bradsby initially produced
brown bats in 1934 (only 1 issued)
trough 1937, but in 1938 they changed
the color scheme to black. These
1937 St. Louis Cardinals "Brown Bats"
were believed to be ordered by
Cardinals owner Sam Breadon as
gifts, presented to players, and front
office executives, in appreciation. As
it turned out, the 1937 season kind of
marks the end of the Gashouse gang with
Dizzy leaving the next year.
The 1937 St Louis Cardinals Louisville Slugger commemorative Louisville
Slugger 125 model brown bat features
facsimile signatures in gilt lettering
of Cardinals players which includes the
following 14 players;
Johnny Mize, Jimmy Brown, Mike Ryba,
Mickey Owen, Pepper Martin, Dizzy Dean,
Frankie Frisch, Mickey Medwick, Stuart
Martin, Terry Moore, Bruce Ogrodowski,
Leo Durocher, Don Gutteridge, Don Padgett.
