Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. AJAX Baseball Bats

  • CIRCA - 1895-1920
  • RETAILOR - HSB&Co.

NOTES:

AJAX was a brand name used by Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. (HSB&Co.) for some of their tools and axes. HSB&Co. was a hardware company in Chicago, Illinois that sold a wide range of products, including tools, cutlery, paints, and sporting goods. The hardware dealership was the descendant of a Chicago store called Tuttle, Hibbard & Co., which took that name in 1855 when William G. Hibbard became a partner. When longtime company employee A. C. Bartlett became a partner in 1882, the company's name became Hibbard, Spencer & Bartlett & Co.

Rev-O-Noc became the in-store brand of products for HSB & Co. starting in the mid 1910s. The brand name Rev-O-Noc, is Conover spelled backwards which was the last name of John Conover the Vice President of Hibbard, Spencer Bartlett and Company.

The earliest AJAX bats produced around 1895 were branded with an image of Ajax the Great, a Greek mythological hero, inside a circle with "Trade Mark" below. Above the circle reads: "This Trademark, Reflects, The Highest Quality" the circle is flanked by the model number: "No. - 100" to the left and right. Below the circle reads: "The Standard for, Excellence" The AJAZ Ring Bats were decorated with "Green Bands" and red stripes.

The next generation of Bats featured the "AJAX" branding inside an oval with The model Number above and below, and "Air Seasoned" above the Oval, "Selected Stock" Below. This label was phased out with the introduction of the Rev-O-Noc branding.
