In 1936 A.J Reach introduced baseball
bats with Safety Grip Dots. The Safety
Grip idea was developed to teach the
player the correct way to hold the bat.
It forces the batter to always "hit
with the trade-mark up" which is the
only correct way to hit. The line of
bats were offered in 12 signature
models that included; Frankie Frisch,
Wally Berger, Earl Averill, and Phil
Cavarretta. Each model was turned with
unique bat size specifications.
The Phil Cavarretta Signature model baseball bat specifications; Medium
hitting surface with a medium sized
handle, giving the bat a straight
taper. The size and length of this
model combine to make a durable light
weight bat, 33 inches long, made of the
finest quality second growth Northern
white ash, air dried under cover.
Resilite treated to eliminate chipping
and to make surface hard. Yellow oiled
hard filled finish, covered with double
coat of lacquer and hand polished. The
Heat Foil center brand was used from
1936-1945.
The A.J. Reach sporting goods company was formed in 1874 by former player
and founder of the Philadelphia
Phillies franchise, Al Reach. The
company was then sold to A.G. Spalding
in 1889. In 1928, A.G. Spalding &
Brothers who controlled 99.7% of the
Wright & Ditson company's shares,
consolidated Reach and the Wright &
Ditson-Victor Co. into A.J. Reach,
Wright & Ditson, Inc.
