In 1943 Orin Amyx and his
father, Dr. M. C. Amyx, a dentist and
mayor of West Plains, started a small
plant for manufacturing juvenile
furniture. Three months after they
started production, fire destroyed
everything. Soon
after, an entirely new plant was
constructed. A
year later the Amyxes were
turning out a considerable amount of
juvenile furniture, and received a
small order for softball bats because
they were so hard to get during the
war. The bats looked so good, they
dropped the furniture business, to
concentrate on manufacturing baseball
Bats.
Equipped with new lathes and modern equipment, they went into full-scale
production. In 1945 the company turned
out more than 50,000 dozen baseball
bats a year. Amyx ranked fourth in the
world with Louisville Sluggers, of
course, leading the pack. The biggest
order for the Amyx Company in those
early years, came from the Army. The
firm shipped between 10 and 15,000
baseball and softball bats.
The Army Softball bats featured a simple reversed branding with "Amyx MFG
Co., West Plains. MO" in the center and
"U.S." on the Barrel to the left. The
"Major League" line of baseball bats
with "Player style" block letter barrel
endorsements, with "U.S" stamped to the
right. Player Style bats included;
DiMaggio, Williams, and Musial which is
pictured here. It's beem noted that
Stan Musial broke a batting slump using
an Amyx baseball bat.
In 1949 Orin Amex, manager of the Amyx MFG. Co. received a call from two
members of St. Louis Cardinals, to
place an order for baseball bats. Five
hundred of the companies best grade ash
bats were ordered by George Sisler, and
Walter Shannon in a visit which
followed a request by the club for
samples of the bats manufactured. The
order was delivered to the Albany
Cardinals, at Albany, Georgia, the
Cardinals farm club. The Cardinal
origination went on to order an
editional 45 dozen bats.
Additional sales include several miniatures and 10 dozen major bats to the
Reds; about 10 dozen to the Dodgers;
miniatures to the Pirates; a few dozen
majors to the Cubs and Tigers; and four
dozen to the Browns.
Ted Gullic, a former St. Louis Browns baseball player and his brother,
Percy, bought stock in the company in
1948. By 1950, the Amyxes repurchased
all stock. Amyx & Gullic MFG. Co.
line of baseball bats include; Campion
Professional Model No. 200 Babe Ruth
Type, Champion Professional model No.
100 Williams Type, Campion Professional
Model No. BB200, No. BB125, No. 84.
