Comet Bat Company Homer N.Y. Baseball Bats

MANUFACTURING PERIOD
Circa Late 1950s-1970s

MANUFACTURER
Comet Bat Co.

NOTES

President and owner Charles L. Marihew Sr., operated the Comet Bat Co. from about the late 1950s to 1973. Comet, which had a storefront shop in the Jefferson County community of Mannsville, was based in Homer New York. They had supplied baseball bats for some International League players, and future Yankee stars, playing for or against the Syracuse Chiefs. MacArthur Stadium home of the Chiefs was located just 30 miles away. Noted players Included; Dave Bergman, Bucky Dent, Mickey Rivers and Thurman Munson.

Ray and Carol Cashel purchased the company in December 1976, reviving the Comet bat Co. after the firm had been dormant for three years. None of the five family members that helped in the production of the bats had made a baseball bat, had never seen anyone else make one, nor had any ideas about how it was done. It took the winter, learning by trial and error, but the company won national recognition for their effotrts.

Players for the Tidewater Tides, Charleston Charlies, Memphis Blues and Richmond Braves used Comet bats. Terry Whitfield, one-time Tribesman who used Comet bats in Syracuse, still used them playing for the San Francisco Giants. Another tribute to the Cashel's craftsmanship is a purchase of six dozen bats by the New York Yankees in 1977.
