Davega Sports & Radio Stores Baseball Bats

MANUFACTURING PERIOD
Circa Late 1930s-1950s

RETAILOR
S.B. Davega Co.

NOTES

Davega Sports and Radio Stores were a New York metropolitan area chain that sold consumer durable goods, appliances, sporting goods, and apparel. They also started their own record label. The company was founded in 1879, expanded to 30 stores by 1954, and survived until April of 1963, when it declared bankruptcy. Eight of its stores were acquired by Henry Modell & Co. (parent company of today's Modell's Sporting Goods) which submitted a winning bid of $311,000 in an April 1963 auction. Henry Modell was the president of the newly formed Modell's Davega, Inc.

The dating of the Davega baseball bats are based on the manufacturing of the Davega brand of baseball gloves, which were produced from the 1930s-1950s. The branding on the baseball bat reads "S.B. Davaga Co. Broadway New York." The store was located at 831 Broadway in Manhattan. The barrel reads "Burnt Oil Finish"
