The Frost, Derby & Co., originally
manufactured scythe snaths and was founded in 1857
by Albert Derby. In 1882, Franklin P. Ball,
joined the firm which was then renamed
Derby & Ball. In 1920, the Edwards &
Edwards Co. merged with Derby & Ball
forming Derby, Ball & Edwards Corp.
With the demand for Scythes dropping
out of the market, the company began
the manufacturing of baseball bats under
Derby, Ball Edwards Corp. In
1933 the company Relocated their
factory in Waterbury, to Barre, VT. and made bats under
the name Derby Bat Corp.. The bats were only made for
a few more years when the Derby bat
Corporation went out of business in
1938.
Ethan Allen, an outfielder, played 13 years in the majors from 1926 to
1938. He played for six different
teams, the Reds, Giants, Cubs, Browns,
Phillies and Cardinals. Ethan Allen
designed the popular
Cadaco All Star Baseball
game, which first hit the market in
1941. The game was revised in 1966,
1968 and again in 1988. It was the best
selling baseball board game of all
time.
The center Brand oval on the bat is centered by the words "DERBY MADE" The
outside border reads "DERBY * BALL
* EDWARDS * CORP." at the top
and at the bottom "WATERBURY * VT" The
Barrel end reads "ETHAN-ALLEN."
