Founded by Elihu Beach Estes, the
E.B. Estes & Sons Company was
established in 1847. The company
produced specialty wood boxes which
were used to package pharmaceuticals.
Elihu’s son Webster entered the
business in the 1870’s and by the
1890’s, EB Estes & Sons was the
preeminent pillbox supplier in the
world.
With offices offices in New York City
as well as Europe and Australia, E B
Estes & Sons Wood Turning Mills were
located in Hancock, Massachusetts,
Farmington, Maine, and St. Johns N.B.,
Canada. Producing baseball bats before
J.F. Hillerich & Son, Eates was one of
the earliest documented bat makers in
the country. The company also
manufactured; turned Wooden Boxes,
Handles, Indian Clubs, Dumb Bells,
Toothpicks, Wooden Tongue Depressors,
Tenpins, Bowling Balls, Bicycles, Toys,
Novelties, Furniture, and more.
There are
Five known examples of bats made by
E.B, Estes & Sons in the hobby
today. Two with the "Estes
New York Crackerjack" center brand.
One
measure 35 inches the other 29, and features a
mushroom style, or "perfect
balance" knob which was patented by Spalding
in 1903. The
other three bats are the "Estes Professional" Model
bats have a center brand of a handlebar
mustache player wearing a Pill Box Cap.
All three measures
33 inches,
and dates to the 19th century. Models,
"B", and "C."
