Founded in 1893 by George Young, Geo.
Young & Co. with a plant located at 715 South
Western Avenue in Chicago, manufactured
baseball and softballs. During the
early 1900s, to though the
1930s, Young employed about 40
to 50 women to sew baseballs at home.
In 1925 a 24 year old Albert E. Fegan,
employed by Geo. Young at a young age,
was granted a
patent for an indoor
baseball. The indoor baseballs
made at this time were too heavy, and
his invention lightened the ball’s core
to ensure a truer flight.
Fegan, promoted to manager of the Geo. Young Co., was also granted a
patent in 1931. His "Concealed stitch"
invention, a method to secure
the cover on baseballs and softballs is
believed to be the precursor to the
"Clincher" design made famous by J. deBeer & son.
In 1952, Albert Fegan became president
of the George Young Company. it's
believed that around this time the
"Best Quality Always - Young - Chicago"
trademark center brand baseball bats
were produced.
With only five employees and limited floor space, it is likely that a
company such as Louisville Slugger made
the baseball bats for the Young
Company. Models include;
"Professional"
No. 298BB, "Professional"
(black finish) No. 198BB, "Official
Base Ball" No. 298BB, "Home Run" (black
finish) No. 198BB, "Home Run" No. 79B,
and "Midget League No. 79B. A "Windy
City" Softball bat was also produced,
and might predate the other bats.
