Brothers
John T. and Egbert T. Hartwell, founded their first handle
factory in Delphos, Ohio in 1865. They
established a factory in Vincennes in
1893. They also had factories in
Clifton, Tennessee, and Mount Carmel,
Illinois. Their main factory was in
Chicago Heights, Illinois. In addition,
they owned two hardwood mills in
Illinois. The company,
made all kinds of handles, turning out
axe handles, railroad and coal pick
handles, sledge handles maul handles,
and hammer handles, to name just a few.
It also made parts for wagons and
carriages, including neckyokes,
singletrees, and doubletrees.
Following the deaths of the Hartwell brothers, the family, reorganized and
incorporated the business under the
name Hartwell Brothers Handle Factory.
Frederick G. Hartwell, president; M.
Victor Hartwell, vice-president. In 1920, the Hartwell Brothers,
filed a copy of it's charter for the
purposes of operating in Tennessee.
The
Hartwell Memphis, Tennessee baseball
bats were produced sometime around the
1940s-1950s. There are two different
center brands. The most common, Hartwell
Brothers, Memphis, Tenn" heat
foil branding which sits high towards the
barrel with no other identifiers, and
the model number below, which included: H-20; H-30;
H-50; H-55; HJ-50; HB-60.
The other (pictured above) with a circle overlapped by the word "Hartwell"
in script, sandwiched between two lines
pinched at the middle, and a Star above
& below in the inner circle. "Memphis"
above, "Tennessee" below, inside the
outer rim of the circle. Models
include: No. LL300 Official Little
League. Hartwell Bros. produced the
Hiawatha brand of baseball bats for
Gambles Minneapolis, department
store in the 1950s, using the same
center brand.
