Joe Hartenberger, a Plymouth wood
carver and designer, produced thousands
of dozens of baseball bats during his
long career. Back in the first decades
of the century he made bats for the
famous Chicago White Sox Hall of Fame pitcher, Red Faber. Hartenberger used to sell to the teams
at Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota
Universities. The bats feature a
trademark of a large "H" surrounded by
"Hart Wood Prod. Co., Shebygan Wis."
The lighter bats were made from the
wood on the top part of a tree while
the heavier bats were fashioned from
wood near the base.
Hartenberger got his start in the wood carving business through his
father who had a wood carving shop in
Shebygan Falls, Wisconsin. He began to
manufacture axe and pick handles, and
eventually baseball bats. Ornamental
wood carving was a major part of his
trade, and was also an expert in
restoring and refinishing antique
pieces.
