31" Bat Product Of China Made In Taiwan

King Athletic Good Co. Philadelphia Baseball Bats

  • CIRCA - 1950s -1960s
  • DISTRIBUTOR - King Athletic Goods Co.

NOTES:

The King Athletic Goods Manufacturing Company was established in 1943 by brothers Samuel, and Ben Rosenbaum, on Arch Street in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The brothers began by making stuffed toys and miniature footballs. As the business prospered, they expanded into sporting goods. The company sold to distributors and department stores.

During the Korean War, King made cold-weather gloves with trigger fingers for the Army. The brothers then became importers of sporting goods with merchandise coming mostly from the Far East. King sold items such as; tennis racquet sets, punching bags, lawn darts, and baseball bats. The knob of the Junior League baseball bats have the length printed on it, and around the perimeter reads "Product Of China, Made In Taiwan"

The baseball bat Rectangular shape center brand, broken by the word "Pro" at the bottom Reads; "King" in the center, a crown at the top with the model number inside, and "King Athletic Goods Co," below.  Block letter player endorsement models include; No. 31B Roger Maris Major League, No. 32B Bobby Richardson Big Leaguer, No. 33B Ken Boyer Leader, No. 33B Mickey Mantle Leader, and No. LL20 Mickey's Model, Approved Junior League.

In 1969 Vorando Inc. acquired the King Athletic Goods Compny. Founder, Harold Rosenbaum continued as president of the newly formed Vornado subsidiary, but retired shortly after. Vornado was also the parent company of two Guys Discount Stores. King Athletic Goods Co. continued to produce sporting goods with a new "King" branding.

In 1977 King Athletic Goods recalled thier 1974 "King Sport" line of aluminum baseball bats because of a defect with the rubber grips. Most of the bats were sold by Two Guys Discount, and small sporting goods outlets. King Athletic Goods offed a free update kit to repair the defect on already purchased bats. Vornado Inc., got out of retailing in 1981 shortly after the closing of two Guys Discount Stores.
