The Louisville Slugger No. 40HB
baseball bats were made of Hackberry. Sometimes called Beaverwood,
the
lightweight wood will not chip or peel
but was susceptible to more breakage
than ash. The bats were made in
assorted models of famous sluggers,
such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie
Foxx, Rogers Hornsby, and Mel Ott.
The short lived experiment with Hackberry wood ended with the success
of the "Powerized" process,
which was used to harden the surface of
the bat much like the bone rubbed
finish of the 1920's. The Hackberry
bats were made available in 1933-1934
with the "Powerized" standard branding,
and "TRADEMARK REG. U.S. PAT. OFFICE."
below the oval.
